She is a comfortable and capable passage maker happily averaging 8 kts in a steady breeze. This yacht is ketch rigged with an air draft of 21 metres. She has a strong, powerful and versatile rig with multiple options for short-handed or fully crewed sailing. Under her current ownership she has been raced in the RORC Offshore Series in Europe, including the Fastnet Race, and cruised extensively, leaving the UK in July 2016 and travelling across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans before arriving in New Zealand in October 2018.Blue Zulu has been professionally maintained with a professional boatbuilder owner since 2013. The boat received a major refit in 2015/2016 (details below) including replacing the complete teak deck with 12mm teak, and a complete Awlgrip hull respray and general refurbish over the last 6 months.
Accommodation:The craftmanship is immediately apparent in this beautifully fitted out classic. The interior is all solid teak and teak veneer over marine ply and grp bulkheads. This yacht comes with 4 cabins. The main saloon is a large open layout with generous seating and good headroom well over 6 foot. There is a large dining table with horseshoe seating, reupholstered last year to keep the interior feeling fresh. The galley is well equipped with a Force 10 gas oven and 3 burner hob, and new Frigoboat compressors and cooling plates for the built-in freezer and fridge. The saloon has ample storge for both food and essential spares, as well as generous bookcases and extra cupboards installed for liveaboard cruising. The nav station has everything to hand, with a large chart table and all the necessary navigation equipment.Aft of the saloon is the owner’s double cabin with ensuite toilet and separate shower.Forward of the saloon is another spacious double cabin with a double bunk and a single bunk above. Again, there is plenty of storage for guests, and a second toilet and shower. The accommodation is finished off with a double v-berth in the focastle.
Machinery:The boat is powered by a Yanmar 4JH4-TE installed new in 2016, with a SD60 Saildrive and an uprated 125 amp/hr alternator. This is complimented by a 4 blade Featherstream folding propeller which happily pushes the boat at 6 knots at 2000 rpm. Fuel consumption is approx. 5 litres per hr, with 3 tanks holding up to 500 litres of diesel.New electrics were installed in the 2015/6 refit, including a Sterling 12v/240v inverter, Sterling Alternator to battery charger, Sterling Pro Charge Ultra 40a charger and Sterling Pro Switch 32 crossover.400 watts of solar (new 2018) feed into the new house batteries installed this year via a Victron MTTP controller with Bluetooth for monitoring via your phone. This keeps the fridge, freezer and domestic electrics working, as well as being able to run the 30 litre per/hr Schenker Watermaker (new 2016) during the day.There is an 80 amp/hr starting battery for the motor, as well as a separate larger 110 amp/hr battery for the Lofrans Tigres Windlass (new 2016). The house batteries provide 500 amp/hrs, with space to add another 250 amp/hrs if required.
Rigging and Sails:The spars are black anodised aluminium built by Reckmann. All the standing rigging was replaced for new in 2016. New fully battened mainsail and mizzen were made by Saunders Sails in 2016. The run on a Tides Marine track to enable reefing and raising or dropping the sails on any point of sail. A new genoa was made by Ratsey and Lapthorn the same year and is on a Profurl Furling System. The bearings for this were replaced in 2017. There is also a symmetrical spinnaker and staysail for more sail options, and a spare genoa.Sails are controlled by Lewmar and Barient winches, Lewmar tracks and cars and Spinlock clutches.
Navigation:Raymarine nav equipment is all integrated to provide all the necessary information. There is a E80 Chart Plotter, with all the necessary Raymaine depth, wind and nav data on repeaters in the cockpit. A Comar AIS receiver / transmitter is integrated to the plotter to help with any potential collisions. There is also a stand-alone Furuno radar. There is also a Navtex Receiver and Sony sound system installed.An Icom ICM-423 VHF is positioned at the Nav Station with a second handset by the helm. There is also access to all exterior lights at the helm, and a binnacle compass with light (new 2018).The powered autohelm is a NECO Autopilot, with a Hydrovane installed in 2016 for wind assisted steering while on passage.
